Health – What is it?
Health – there are many models of health and many organizations have attempted to define what brings health. What brings health can be generally streamlined into pillars, or components.
The VA Whole Health model captures many components of health, but even that model can be simplified to 7 elements:
7 Components of Holistic Health
1. MOVE – Physical Activity: This is how you move your body. Whether it be unstructured or structured. Movement is critical for health. If you are not moving, you are dying.
2. EAT & DRINK
Nutrition and what you drink (or don’t drink). What food and drink are you using to fuel and recover?
3. REST & SLEEP
We are designed to sleep and rest! Not just sleep, but also to rest with margin.
4. MIND
Brain health and mental health – this is the connection we have between our brain and mind. Not just emotional health, but Mind health. Emotions, anxiety, depression, joy and happiness – all are derived from the brain.
5. COMMUNITY
We are human beings designed to be in community. Because we are images of the Triune God, we embody the need for community.
6. SPIRIT
Maybe the most important part of health – is the representation of you and who you are in the universe. Are you known, seen and heard? Who do you believe you are?
7. Purpose This is the purpose and the search for meaning in life – which drives the whole reason of our life. Without this sense of who we are – we will always struggle with health.
