There is lots of debate on Statins in Primary prevention for Coronary Disease. Now the USPSTF weighs in on their recommendations.
Bottom Line:
1. Adults 40 -75 with 1 risk factor: Hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia PLUS
Pooled Cohort risk > 10%. –> Give Statin (low to moderate intensity)
2. Same as #1, but with risk 7.5% to 10% –> Consider statin (low to moderate intensity)
3. Adults over 75 –> Unknown.
